The dates have been set for the adult delegation from Roseburg to visit Kuki City, Japan on October 2-11, 2024.

The trip will include visits to Shirakawago, Gokayama area and Matsumoto Castle. Watch for additional information on this visit on our Facebook page for more information and request an application if interested in participating.

Roseburg Sister Cities, Inc., promotes friendship and understanding between the US and Japan through an exchange program which occurs every year. Japan delegations come in odd numbered years; Roseburg delegates visit Japan in even numbered years. New members are always encouraged and welcome.

Hiroshima Peace Gingko Tree Dedication

On June 1, 2023, the Roseburg Sisters Cities organization and Umpqua Community College gathered to dedicate the Hiroshima Peace Gingko Tree. A special plaque was displayed to be installed. Roseburg Sister Cities members, Kuki City, Japan Delegates, Umpqua Community College staff and several special guests were present to witness the dedication. The gingko tree seed survived the Hiroshima atomic bombing in 1945 and was gifted to promote peace by Hideko Tamura Snider of One Sunny Day Initiatives.

Poem was read both in English and Japanese of Pope John Paul II’s appeal for peace

Roseburg Sister Cities-Kuki City Delegation Visit

Kuki City Delegates arrived June 1, 2023. There were ten delegates: Haoru Hirasawa, Shoichi Yamada, Yoshiko Yamada, Koji Okazaki, Soji Okamura, Kazumi Suzuki, Taki Ohara, Yasunori Koyama, Atsuko Shimizu, and Sanae Kawamoto.

They arrived at the Eugene Airport and were transported to Umpqua Community College, to take part in the Gingko Tree Dedication and to meet their Host families. Day 1, events included: City Day, with visits and tours of the Roseburg City Library, the Roseburg Police and Fire Departments, a K-9 demonstration from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Department, meeting and tour of Roseburg City Hall with Mayor Larry Rich, City Manager Nikki Messenger and City Recorder, Patty Hitt, a walk down Main and Jackson streets to view the recently painted murals as part of a downtown beautifications, lunch at the Urban New York Pizza & Grill, and a tour of the Friendship Garden. The day ended with the Welcome Dinner at the Roseburg Country Club. Day 2 & 3 - Host families did a wide variety of activites to showcase Douglas County and Oregon. Day 4, events included: a visit to Fir Grove Elementary School with lunch provided, viewing the the orgami crane’s made by the students, and a felting project at the Umpqua Valley Arts Center with various speakers, as well as visitsing the cherry trees and Japanese artwork located at the Art Center. Day 5, involved a visit to Wildlife Safari Village for the Farewell Meal. Speakers from Wildlife Safari shared animals and answered questions about them and the facility. A Farewell Potluck Brunch took place with delicious American and Japanese foods and desserts. Each Delegate spoke about their visit and thanked their host and was full of happy and sadness as they prepared to return to Japan. The final afternoon and evening was spent in Eugene. Delegates had one last opportunity to shop at Fifth Street Market, enjoy a relaxing and fun evening at a restaurant and pack for their early morning flight to return home.

Roseburg Sister Cities and Kuki City, Japan Student Exchange Program

Help Restore What Covid Took from Our Youth.

10 local students have committed to travel to Kuki, Japan, our sister city, in July to help restore the Japanese exchange student program. They will visit, learn, and return to Roseburg where they plan to mentor the next young group entering the program who will host and travel in partnership with our Japan sister city Kuki, and their youth.

You can help by:

*Purchasing a $24 coupon for a beautiful hanging basket redeemable between May1 and July1 at the plant warehouse located next to the medical building on Stewart Pkwy across from Sherm’s Thunderbird.

*You are also welcome to make a cash donation to our group and we are a 501(C)3, so please let us know if you need that information.

Robert Douglas will present the finer points of sake brewing, paired with a selection of Sushi & other Japanese fare.
